CMSE Student Technical Support

The Department of Computational, Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE) is seeking undergraduate students (any major) who are interested in learning more about computation and in working with an interdisciplinary team.

CMSE is unique among computational academic units nationally; it is the first to comprehensively treat computation as the "triple junction" of algorithm development and analysis, high performance computing, and applications to scientific and engineering modeling and data science. This approach recognizes computation as a new discipline, rather than being decentralized into isolated sub-disciplines. CMSE is jointly administered by the College of Natural Science and the College of Engineering.

This student employee will as part of the CMSE Technology team who help support and promote a variety of departmental infrastructure and research initiatives. Tasks and opportunities include: designing websites, media relations, data analytics, developing and testing curriculum, running simulations, conducting system testing, working with hardware, system level administration and programming. Students with all levels of experience are encouraged to apply; we will work with motivated candidates to identify projects that suit their interests and allow them to learn marketable skills that they can use after they graduate.

Desired Qualifications

Applicants must be current MSU undergraduate students. Applicants must demonstrate good problem solving skills; strong oral and written communication skills; an eagerness to learn; and the ability to work in a self-directed manner and as part of a team. Although no prior work experience is required, some knowledge of computer programming or scientific computing is expected. Ideally, applicants will also have experience in one or more of the following: computer administration, using HPC systems, customer technical support, hacking or tinkering. Students will be hired for a single semester with the option to renew at the end of the semester (assuming there is a match for projects and funding). Full-time students are expected to work in the office a minimum of 10 hours per week during the semester with a maximum of 20 hours. Students hired for the summer term are expected to work in the office for 40 hours a week.

To apply, send a cover letter and resume to Dr. Dirk Colbry (colbrydi@msu.edu).
