Receiving a master's degree along the way

CMSE Ph.D. students are eligible to receive a Master's of Science in Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering.

Eligibility criteria

1. Complete 30 credits of coursework.

Please note the following:
-300 level courses are not eligible to count towards the 30 required credits.
-Only 2 400 level courses can be counted towards towards the 30 required credits.
-The research credits do not count towards the 30 required credits.

Procedure

1. Reach out to the Graduate Team at cmsegrad@msu.edu indicating that you have completed the required credits and are interested in receiving a master's degree.
2. Wait to hear back from the CMSE Grad Team that they have completed a required step of adding a master's to your account.
3. Go to student.msu.edu and file a GradPlan, indicating the MS course plan (by selecting the 30 credits you will count toward your degree) and choosing it under the Master's of Science in CMSE (Plan B) route.
4. Let the graduate team know that you completed the GradPlan. Ensure that you also complete the research requirements (RECR) or have them completed for the first two years of your degree by examining the doctoral route for RECR requirements via link.
5. After the graduate team confirms the completion and your GradPlan request got approved, go ahead and file for graduation. Please make sure to select graduating with your master's. You can find brief instructions here.
6. The graduate team will confer your degree in the end of the semester. The institution should be able to confer your degree in around two weeks post the final exams.
