Shinhan Shiu Appointed as Red Cedar Distinguished Professor
This week we congratulate Dr. Shinhan Shiu for his achievement as the Red Cedar Distinguished Professor! Dr. Shiu is a computational plant biologist who specializes in utilizing machine learning to discover the complex relationship between genetic information and phenotypic traits. To realize these ideas, he has been working for 10 years in projects such as MSU’s Integrated Training Model in Plant and Computational Sciences, or IMPACTS - an NSF-funded training program that is committed to bringing together grad students across plant and computational sciences to address grand challenges in plant biology.
The title of Red Cedar Distinguished Professor is accompanied by an award of $15,000 each year for three years, totaling $45,000. When asked, Dr. Shiu said, laughing "I’d like to use the money to get the lab a massage chair". Since his success is thanks to the work done by his lab members, he'd like to use these funds to create a more welcoming and comforting environment for them. Dr. Shiu said that this award is a recognition of the work done by everyone in the Shiu Lab, which is run jointly by Melissa Lehti-Shiu, an assistant professor of plant biology.
