Graduate Student Recruitment
Who Are We?
Why Join Us?
The use of computational methods and tools to solve important problems is a fact of life in the 21st century in the sciences, engineering, and many other fields. Knowledge of how these methods work, and how to use them effectively, has become crucial to the success of students entering these fields. Close collaboration between those who develop new algorithms and the scientists and engineers who apply new methods to cutting-edge problems can foster innovation and greatly facilitate discovery.
In pursuit of these goals, the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineeringoffers a range of graduate programs that will train students to be leaders in computational and data science. These offerings include graduate certificates as well as a PhD program in Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering. If you have any questions about the coursework or curricula that will be offered, please contact the CMSE Graduate Director.
Eligibility for Application
Students who wish to pursue a PhD in Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering should have a four-year bachelor's degree in any area of science or engineering, and have a strong interest in computational or data science. Students are expected to have taken courses in calculus through differential equations, and to have a working knowledge of basic numerical methods, linear algebra and basic statistics. In addition, students are expected to be proficient in at least one commonly-used programming language. More details, as well as profiles of successful domestic and international applicants can be found at this web page.
Application Deadlines

The application requires a CV, academic and personal statement, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. It is particularly important for students to identify faculty that they are interested in working with in their academic statement! We strongly suggest reaching out to these faculty members via email prior to submitting your application. International scholars have some additional requirements, which can be found here. Please direct any questions or concerns to cmsegrad@msu.edu or call +1-517-432-0168.
